Abstract

Lad mags are the UK term for men’s magazines targeting young men that often showcase gadgets, fashion, and scantily clad women. I examined three lad mags of April 2012, Loaded, Maxim, and FHM in efforts to expose any themes of sexual violence. I discovered commonalities in the traditional male characteristics of dominance, power, and aggression; the idealization of men that uphold these characteristics and the degradation of men who do not, sexist and derogatory language towards women, and the objectification of women. I explain how these themes contribute to rape culture, and harmful to our society. Lastly, I provide suggestions on steps we can towards a rape-free world.
