Emma Elder
Director and Editor-in-Chief

Emma is an undergraduate student in the physiology program at the University of Alberta. She aims to be a voice for undergraduate research through Eureka and is an advocate for showcasing the brilliant discoveries made by students. Emma is exploring the effects of high cholesterol on maternal vasculature during pregnancy and post-partum in the Davidge Lab. Aside from being a busy science student, she is a wearer of many hats in various programs across the city including Hope Mission, Open Arms Patient Advocacy Society, and Edmonton Poetry Festival Society. During her downtime, Emma loves taking an ice cream break at Made by Marcus and binging on a good TV show. ✉︎

Gopesh Gopinath
Vice Director/Editor

Gopesh is a third-year student at the University of Alberta studying Biological Sciences and Psychology. He is passionate about science communication and his major research interests include molecular biology and genetics. In his leisure time, Gopesh enjoys reading and watching historical documentaries. ✉︎

Justin Knechtel
Editor

Justin is a PhD student in Oncology at the University of Alberta. During his undergraduate degree, he studied biochemistry in the honors program and completed a certificate in biomedical research. As a result, he understands the value of undergraduate research and aims to highlight the work of undergraduate researchers through his role at Eureka. In his spare time, he loves running, cycling, and spending time with his dogs. ✉︎

Montse Montes
Editor

Montse is a third-year PhD student in the Nutrition and Metabolism program at the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on studying body composition abnormalities and energy needs in COVID-19 recovery patients through a clinical trial. Alongside her research, she mentors international undergraduate students. She is also an active member of the ALES Grad Mentorship Committee, supporting fellow graduate students. Beyond academia, Montse finds joy in traveling, ballet dancing, and spending time with her family and friends. ✉︎

Sophie Sigfstead
Editor

Sophie is an undergraduate student at the University of Alberta majoring in mathematics and computational science. She is currently conducting research in several areas, including AI in medicine (supervised by Dr. Christopher Cheung) and health misinformation (under Professor Timothy Caulfield). Additionally, she is the co-founder and CTO of a health technology company that was recently accepted into the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research Entrepreneurship for Cardiovascular Health Opportunities (ECHO) program. Sophie also represents Canadian undergraduate research interests as a member of Computer Science Canada’s national student council (CS-CAN SPAC) and volunteers with several wellness-based programs on campus. In her downtime, she loves to read, spend time with friends and enjoy the outdoors! ✉︎

Chris Jiang
Editor

Chris is a first year UAlberta student studying Immunology and Infection. His work in science communication involved being part of a high-school startup journal focusing on making cutting-edge biological research accessible to high school students, inspired by his own interests in immunology and clinical research. Along with being an editor for Eureka, Chris works as a Residence Assistant on East Campus, and enjoys volunteering at Kaye Edmonton Clinic and with the PMSA on campus. In his free time, Chris plays piano and does graphic design. ✉︎

Noam Sander
Regional Representative (Western), Former Director

Noam recieved a BSc in Neuroscience (Hons) in 2023. He is passionate about science communication and aims to provide undergraduate students with opportunities that make research in all disciplines accessible, enjoyable, and rewarding through Eureka. Although he is fascinated by many fields of science, Noam is specifically interested in public health, health sciences, and injury prevention. He is also currently involved in the Colbourne Lab, where he studies potential neuroprotective treatments and interventions to protect the brain after stroke. Noam’s free time is often spent outdoors doing activities such as hiking, biking, and snowboarding. ✉︎

Mary Cheuk
Regional Representative (Pacific), Former Director

Mary recieved a BSc in Psychology (Spec) in 2022. Through Eureka, she hopes to promote the many niches of science and make research more approachable to undergraduate students. Mary has been involved in many facets of research, her main interests including mental health and neuropsychology. Currently, she is studying rhythm and stuttering as a part of the Louck Lab. In her free time, Mary is usually reading or sketching with a sitcom on in the background. ✉︎

Daniela Roth
Regional Representative (Western)

Daniela is a PhD candidate at the U of A School of Dentistry, studying craniofacial development and the role that cranial sutures have in midfacial growth. With a BSc in Physiology and Developmental Biology, her current research brings together a long-time passion for pathology and the amazing, complex processes underlying development. Most of her days are spent at the lab bench tending to bone cell cultures or staining skulls. Her passion in research lies in the importance of curiosity and interdisciplinary thinking in broadening the horizons of science. Daniela hopes to bring this perspective to Eureka, making it an exciting and creative platform to showcase the cutting edge undergraduate research going on at the University of Alberta.  ✉︎

Ludwig Paul Cabling
Regional Representative (Pacific)

Paul is a Geoscientist-in-Training and PhD candidate at the University of Victoria, where he studies nature-based solutions for urban and rural water challenges. He completed his MSc at the University of Alberta, studying the environmental performance of emerging urban water and wastewater systems. Having first experienced geoscience and community-based research as an undergrad, he has become an advocate for science communication, outreach, and education. Alongside Eureka, he is involved with the Canadian Association on Water Quality and the International Water Association's Young Water Professionals Chapter in Canada.  ✉︎

Sherry Gu
Regional Representative (Central)

Sherry is an undergraduate student in the neuroscience program at the University of Alberta. Sherry is involved in several ongoing projects in the Colbourne Lab, where she studies changes in cell morphology following stroke. She is passionate about creating research opportunities for undergraduate students in science, with the goal of encouraging students to dive into the academic world and explore their interests. On days that she doesn’t do school work (which is often more than just weekends), you’ll find Sherry rewatching her favourite shows and eating noodles. ✉︎
