Abstract

Discusses seven adaptations of George Langelaan's 1957 short story "The Fly", most notably David Cronenberg's 1986 and 1989 film versions and Howard Shore and David Henry Hwang's opera version. "Proceeding chronologically through all seven incarnations of the story, I illustrate how each new interpretation adds to the saga’s on-going preoccupation with illness, love, and mortality.
