    Fall & Winter 2021/22
    Vol. 13 No. 1&2 (2022)

As the University of Alberta adjusted to a return to in-person learning during 2021 and 2022, the campus community has seen the hope of returning to normalcy realized. As we continue to adjust to the realities of the changing regulations, and to the abundant caution that necessitates a return to in-person learning, we continue to look forward to a safe and productive academic year. This return to in-person learning is the direct result of the hard work that the University of Alberta community has done. Hard work that reflects the dedication of our campus community towards each other, and towards continued learning in a safe and healthy environment.

With a new fall semester on the horizon, we are proud to present the Fall 2021 and the Winter 2022 edition of the Constellations Undergraduate Journal of History and Classics. Being the first edition of the journal to be produced since the start of virtual learning in 2020, the journal faced a number of challenges on the path to publication. Unfortunately, these challenges forced the cancellation of the annual symposium and also made combining the fall and winter publications necessary for this academic year. However, despite this delay, Constellations remains fully committed to our goal of continuing to publish and promote excellent undergraduate research in both history and classics, regardless of circumstances.

As an undergraduate managed and produced journal Constellations relies immensely upon volunteer reviewers, author submissions, and readers for the continuation of the journal. This reliance has become even more important throughout the second year of the pandemic as our reviewers, authors, and readers of the journal have again stepped up to ensure the continuation of the journal through the challenges it has faced. We are endlessly grateful to everyone who is involved with the journal, as well as every reader of the journal, who have come together to publish another edition of the Constellations Journal. Thank you!

While my editorship has expired and I will be stepping down as the editor of the journal, I’m happy to introduce Amina Mohamed and Alison Thomas as the next two editors of the Constellations Journal. Both Amina and Alison are very talented as well as enthusiastic about taking over the editorships of the journal. I wish them both all the best in their editorships and the coming academic year.

All of us at Constellations look forward to the opportunity to again work diligently with everyone on the Fall 2022 edition of the journal, so that Constellations can continue to publish and promote excellent undergraduate research in history and classics.

    Winter 2021
    Vol. 12 No. 2 (2021)

With the beginning of the fall semester and the recommence of (mostly) in-person classes, the University of Alberta community has seen the first steps towards the return to normalcy as it was before the COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally changed our way of daily life. While the pandemic has brought about creative and intuitive solutions that we have adopted in order to continue learning and living life, it is undeniable that there is much excitement surrounding a return to in-person learning on campus.

It is in this environment that the Constellations Undergraduate Journal of History and Classics brings together the Winter 2021 edition. As the second edition of the journal produced entirely via a virtual format, the Winter 2021 edition of the journal has faced a number of challenges on the road to publication which has resulted in its delay. However, despite this delay, Constellations remains fully committed to our goal of continuing to publish and promote excellent undergraduate research in both history and classics, regardless of the pandemic circumstances. As such, we are proud to present to you this edition of the journal, and we thank you for your patience regarding its delay.

Constellations is a student journal that relies immensely upon volunteer reviewers, author submission, and readers for the continuation of the journal. This reliance has become even more important through the pandemic as those reviewers, authors, and readers of the journal stepped up to ensure the continuation of the journal through the challenges it has faced. We are endlessly grateful to everyone who is involved with the journal, as well as every reader of the journal, who have come together to again make another edition of Constellations possible. Thank you.

We look forward to the opportunity to again work hard with everyone on the Fall 2021 edition of the journal, so that Constellations can continue to publish and promote excellent undergraduate research in history and classics.

Stay healthy, best of luck in the new semester, and enjoy the Winter 2021 edition of Constellations!

    Fall 2020
    Vol. 12 No. 1 (2020)

As we continue to confront the challenges presented to us by the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone has been forced to adapt in new and creative ways that have fundamentally changed the realities of daily life. This academic year, Constellations is proud to announce that for the first time in the journal’s history we can present the Fall 2020 edition of Constellations as an edition that has been produced entirely via a virtual format. We are immensely grateful to our authors, reviewers, and advisors who have been patient and adapted with us to make this edition of the journal possible. Thank you.

While our annual symposium had been unfortunately canceled last year due to the pandemic, we are happy to announce that this year the Constellations Undergraduate Research Symposium will proceed virtually as the second iteration from March 23-24. We hope that this will be an opportunity for everyone to once again come together to share interesting and original undergraduate research, despite the limitations of COVID-19.

We look forward to again working hard with our authors and reviews to promote history and classics undergraduate research in the Winter 2021 edition of Constellations.

Stay healthy, and enjoy the Fall 2020 edition of Constellations!

  • Winter 2019
    Vol. 10 No. 2 (2019)

We are pleased to present the Winter 2019 edition of Constellations, which showcases a wide array of undergraduate work from both the University of Alberta and MacEwan University. We would like to thank everyone who had a hand in making this edition possible, including the authors who had the courage to place their work in the hands of their peers, and the reviewers who helped shape the content of this edition.

Further, the Winter 2019 edition represents the culmination of the hard work and effort that went into making our 10th year of publishing a possibility. From the begining of the year, we set out to do something special in honor of Constellations 10th year. This took the form of what became a two day conference which, like the journal, showcased undergraduate work from both the University of Alberta and MacEwan University. Thank you to Dr. David Marples, who proved to be unwavering in his support of the journal and gave the first keynote presentation of our conference. Another thank you should also go out to Dr. Carollee Pollock, who gave our second keynote presentation on the importance of public history.

The study of history and classics becomes especially important when it is situated in an interdisciplinary way. Over the course of the past year, we have worked hard to continue our focus on history and classics, while aiming for a wider, more interdisciplinary focus for the journal. This is something we feel the conference and this issue achieve well. This edition showcases both papers submitted for peer-review but also a handful of "conference picks"--papers presented at our 10th year conference that we feel deserve to be showcased here.

We hope that you enjoy the wide range of topics covered in this edition, which even includes a poem!

***A note about our "conference picks" section. These papers were not subject to our peer-review process. Rather, they were presented at the 2019 Undergraduate Symposium. All other papers were peer-reviewed by our review team.***

    Have a great summer!

Cole Kruper and Lucas Nowosiad, 2018-19 co-editors.

Look for our tenth anniversary conference to be held in winter 2019, where we hope to provide authors with the opportunity to present their research in a conference setting. • Vol. 9 No. 2 (2018)

We hope you enjoy the latest installment of undergraduate historical research at the University of Alberta. This edition showcased some of the strongest submissions we have received as editors, and we are very pleased at the efforts of our editorial team in helping authors prepare their works for publication. An added pleasure Constellations was involved with this winter semester was helping OASIS plan and hold a Faculty of Arts wide conference in March—make sure to keep an eye out for next year’s conference! Undergraduate research is the lifeblood of our journal and the very purpose the University as an institution encourages. We are excited for the future prospects for the Journal, and are happy to announce Lucas Nowosiad and Cole Kruper will be taking the reigns as co-editors for our 2018/2019 editions.

On behalf of the Department of History and Classics and Constellations, we present to you our Winter 2018 edition and sincerely thank you for your interest in our historical research.
