Abstract

Kelsey Lucyk analyzes how the media and the institution of sport have entrenched certain ideals about masculinity meanwhile reinforcing homophobic attitudes towards gender roles in sports. This article focusses primarily on analyzing Canadian sports and makes use of the concept of muscular Christianity to explain hegemonic masculinity as found in the Canadian institution of sport.

Kelsey Lucyk

Kelsey Lucyk recently finished her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Alberta, majoring in both Anthropology and History. Throughout her degree she has taken interest in Canadian History and Sociocultural Anthropology, and has attempted to integrate the two in her work. She will be pursuing a Master of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary in Fall 2011.
