Abstract

Adriana Ayers studies the evolution of kotex advertising, focusing specifically on the way in which African American women were figured into changing advertisers’ conceptions of womanhood. The article analyzes images featured in various women’s magazines to examine how ideas surrounding menstruation were packaged and sold to women.

Author Biography

Adriana Ayers

Adriana Ayers finished the fourth and final year of her history degree in December and is preparing her self for graduate studies in Public History at the University of Western Ontario. Aside from a strong desire to understand the social aspects of our country's history, Adriana also has a keen interest in the Second World War, specifically the propaganda techniques employed by both sides, during and after the war. Outside of school, Adriana can be found nose deep in a graphic novel or portraying an early Edmontonian at Fort Edmonton Park.
