Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.

 

Author Guidelines

To submit an article electronically, you will need to register on this site as an author. To initiate the submission process, you need to first log in, then click on the "my journals" tab on the LHS of the homepage and proceed to the "authors" section of the site.

We welcome submissions from both scholars and practitioners. Submissions must be original and not be either previously published or currently being considered for publication elsewhere.

Please note that submission of a manuscript implies

  1. commitment to publish in this journal.
  2. agreement that, if accepted for publication in the research section of the journal, your article will be published alongside an invited response to the ideas it puts forward and that
  3. the choice of an appropriate respondent for each of the research articles published is a matter for the editors to decide.
The main criterion for acceptance of any submission is that it demonstrate a link with the idea of complexity in its technical, applied, philosophical, theoretical, or narrative manifestations in education.

Articles that demonstrate no link with complexity will not be considered under any circumstances. Articles that have a link with complexity but no link (or only a very tenuous link) to education will be considered only in exceptional cases.

There are five sections to the journal (listed below) and we will consider submissions for any of these.

  1. Research articles: Original research articles of between 4,000 to 10,000 words which address educational issues from a complex perspective.
  2. Responses to research articles: Normally these responses will be solicited by the editorial team. Selected respondents will be asked to elaborate on the article in question, showing how its insights link to other bodies of knowledge.
  3. Vignettes: Short descriptions of evocative episodes via either prose, poetry, photograph, or drawing. Submissions should be between 2,000 to 4,000 words in length.
  4. Semantic play: Normally areticles for this section are solicited by the editorial team. Contributors to this section are asked to select one term that is prominent in the educational literature and to give it a complexivist spin. Submissions should be between 1,000 to 2,000 words in length.
  5. Book reviews: Normally these will be solicited by the editorial team. Book reviews should be approximately 1,000-1,500 and designed to provide a quick, informative, and insightful service to Complicity readers. Essay reviews, are also appropriate. With these one or more books, journal articles or other publications are analyzed and weaved together to provide a sophisticated review that explores complexivist themes and their potential implications for educational research and practice.

Submissions for all sections should conform to the following stylistic and formatting specifications:

  1. All articles should be submitted via the electronic submission system, either as a Microsoft Word document or in Rich Text Format (RTF).
  2. Submissions should be single spaced with minimal typesetting. Please use a 12-point font; italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and place all illustrations, figures, and tables within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  3. Citing references, please use the APA (6th edition) referencing style. . Each reference cited in the main paper should be included in the reference list at the end of the paper.
  4. Begin the reference list on a new page. List only sources used in writing the paper. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author's last name and include complete bibliographic information.
  5. Where available, URLs for the references should be provided.
  6. Where relevant, acknowledgements should be provided at the end of the paper. If the paper has formerly been presented at a conference then this should also be acknowledged in this area.
  7. Submissions should contain a brief biographical sketch (or around 100 words) containing the author(s) name, affiliation, mailing address, phone, fax and e-mail.
  8. Arrange for a careful proof editing of the paper before submission. If English is not your first language, please attempt to enlist the help of a native English speaker to edit the piece, to correct grammar and ensure that the idiom is correct. This will make it easier for the referees to give full justice to your work.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word or RTF document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
