Author Guidelines

ESC: English Studies in Canada Author Guidelines

The following guidelines are required of all articles submitted for review:

Scholars wishing to submit an article for peer review must register as an author at ESC/user/register, where they will be prompted to follow instructions for submission on their user homepage.

Since author's names are not revealed to referees during assessment, the title but not the author's name should appear on the uploaded article. The author’s identity should be stripped from the document’s properties.

Submissions require a 100 word abstract, a list of key words, and a 50 word biographical statement.

Articles will normally be 6000-9000 words in length. Inquiries about longer articles may be addressed to the Editor at mo@ualberta.ca.

Articles must be prepared using parenthetical documentation and include a list of works cited as described in the most recent MLA Style Manual.

Footnotes (not endnotes) should be kept to a minimum.

ESC prefers submissions in MS Word, but also accepts WordPerfect and RTF.

The following style preferences greatly reduce the labour of typesetting, and we appreciate their observance:

• ESC uses Canadian spelling (see The Canadian Oxford Dictionary): this includes “z” in words such as analyze, specialize, organize; “u” in words such as labour, colour, honour; single consonants in words such as enrol and enrolment, traveler and traveled; “re” in words like centre and metre.
• ESC does not hyphenate words like postcolonialism, postmodernism, Eurocentric.
• There should be one space after a period or other concluding punctuation mark, and after colons and semi-colons.
• Punctuation marks should appear inside quotation marks.
• Square brackets should be used inside of parenthetical brackets.
• Use double quotes for “ironized” words, not single quotes.
• Use a lowercase letter after a colon.
• Do not use a period after abbreviations for Dr, Mr, Mrs, Ms, St (Saint).
• Do not use a second “s” in possessive nouns ending with the letter “s.”
• Ellipses are preceded and followed by one space, except when they follow a sentence-ending period. Ellipses should be created by one character and not with three dots.
• For long dashes, use the em dash, not two hyphens. There is no space before or after a long dash.
• Omit square brackets around ellipses in quotations.
• Put a space before and after a slash delimiting a line of poetry.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. When available, the URLs to access references online are provided at the appropriate point in the Works Cited section. The URLs are ready to click (e.g., http://pkp.sfu.ca).
  4. The text uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review) have been followed.
