About the Journal
Focus and Scope
The focus and scope of the journal includes anything sociological, that is presenting scholarly research with a sociological perspective. This does not completely exclude perspectives of other disciplines; sociology is a very broad and overlapping field and submissions from other disciplines will be accepted. Submissions are limited to works done at the undergraduate level.
Peer Review Process
INVOKE is run on a peer review system. This means that submissions made to the journal are reviewed by at least two reviewers at the undergraduate level or higher. Reviewers judge submissions on a three point scale: 1) publish with minor or no changes, 2) publish with changes, and 3) do not publish. Reviewers have approximately two weeks to review submissions and submit feedback to both the Author and Editor(s). Once the Author has implemented the Reviewer's recommendations, submissions that successfully meet the criteria for the journal will be reviewed by the Editor(s), who make the final decision about publication.
Submission Guidelines
Click the "Make a Submission" button on our homepage to submit your manuscript. You will be guided through a checklist to ensure all submission requirements are met. The submission page includes tips for preparing a quality submission. Students may submit a maximum of 2 undergraduate-level manuscripts per academic term.
Publication Frequency
The journal is published once per academic year (one Fall Term edition).
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Reviewer Policies
Reviewers are from an undergraduate-level background or higher. University of Alberta undergraduate students, particularly those in the Department of Sociology, are encouraged to apply to become Reviewers for INVOKE. Reviewers abide by a double-blind peer review system and judge submissions on a three point scale: 1) publish with minor or no changes, 2) publish with changes, and 3) do not publish. Sources of Support
The Undergraduate Sociology Journal, INvoke, is generously supported by the University of Alberta's Sociology Department. The journal is also hosted by the University of Alberta Libraries. INVOKE is now delivered through the Sociology Undergraduate Students Association (SUSA), as of September 2014.
Journal History
The Undergraduate Sociology Journal was initiated by a few interested sociology students. The Department of Sociology accepted requests made by students to have an undergraduate journal and INvoke was created in the 2011/2012 school year. INvoke was re-launched as part of the Sociology Undergraduate Students Association (SUSA) in the fall of 2014. After another state of hiatus, INVOKE was once again re-launched through SUSA in 2017.
